Hair as an Indicator of Health

Not too long ago I had very thin hair; I was using the flat iron a lot and eating the government sanctioned “healthy diet”. I was probably about 45 years old when I was at dinner with the family and one of my sisters mentioned that my hair was getting thin. She had just gone through a thin hair period (it runs in the family), and I’m pretty sure she fixed it with Rogaine or something like that.

I didn’t really do anything about it right away; I think I started taking gelatin and biotin supplements, but I tend to take supplements pretty haphazardly. A few months later I got a horrible haircut; I had been going to this girl and she was really great, and my hair looked awesome, but this time she butchered my hair. She took off about four or five inches and did something with my side bangs that just ruined that entire side of my hair. My husband was not happy with how short it was at all, and this was when I started concentrating on my hair in earnest.

Searching, the most common thing I read about growing hair was drinking bone broth, so I started making that. Just prior to this I had discovered saturated fats and animal fats and was experimenting with those. Seriously, saturated fats (butter, coconut oil, bacon fat, etc) changed my life. My body and brain LOVE them. I’m drinking coffee with raw heavy cream right now!

During this search and research, I discovered the Paleo/Primal Diet, and whereas I don’t religiously stick to it now, it really pretty much changed my life, too. Cutting out most of my carbs eventually cut out most of my inflammation. Before, I was mostly vegetarian, and after I was mostly carnivore. Not “you are what you eat” (who wants to be a grain or vegetable?) but “eat what you are” (you are an animal!).

For thick healthy hair, there is only so much you can do on the outside to help: you can quit using high heat appliances, you can oil your hair, you can only shampoo twice a week with a sulfite free shampoo and conditioner, you can go No Poo, but eventually you have to go to the source of the problem. You have to fix your body before you can fix your hair. If your body isn’t healthy, your hair probably won’t be either. A lot of hair is genetic, but if you give your body the necessary building blocks, you can maximize your hair growth.

I tried to use my flat iron as little as possible, and I thought that it was the main culprit as far as my thin hair went, and it did help, but I needed more. I was making bone broths and using them for soup but I didn’t really think of using them as lunch until I discovered intermittent fasting (IF), and broth fasting. I don’t constantly IF, though; I go on spurts of IF, resistant starch, and eating whatever leftovers that I happen to bring from home for lunch. I eat a full regular dinner with my husband each evening.

So, what is my current regimen? Monday morning I wash and blow-dry straight (I have very curly hair that is easier to straighten than it is to make the curls behave). Tuesday I use a YouCurl curling iron (I curl my hair in only three parts: back, and both sides for larger curls) to reduce bedhead ; it is damaging, but since it’s not used near the roots like a flat iron, it doesn’t thin your hair. Wednesday and Friday I shampoo and blow-dry, and Thursday, Saturday and Sunday I use the YouCurl. Sometimes I wear a hat on Sundays, LOL.

The evenings before shampoo day, I will oil my hair with either coconut oil or Argan oil or both. Every day after drying/curling, I use a tiny amount of pomade (wax) from either Pantene or Herbal Essences to make my hair less static and look more polished. The main reason I don’t shampoo every day is because I do more damage to my hair when I do. I looked for a dry shampoo to try, but I couldn’t find one, and then decided that I didn’t want to put any chemicals on my scalp. I’ve heard you can use baby powder or baking soda, but I’m not that adventurous.

Recently, I have been taking a couple of tablespoons of Blackstrap Molasses before bed with the zinc and magnesium supplements that I take to sleep (excellent sleep aid!). Molasses is also good for sleep like raw honey is. The honey didn’t seem to help my sleep, but I’ve been sleeping like crazy with the Molasses.

To improve the gelatin in my bone broth, I have been getting chicken feet at the Asian Market to add to my chicken broth and I have been getting cow hooves, feet, and tendons for my beef broth. My hair is now nice and full, and I only have another four inches to grow it before it will be the perfect length. The funny thing is that before starting on bone broth, both my husband and I were going gray, but after, both of our hair went back dark. I hardly have any gray right now and I’m in my early fifties.

Everyone remarks on how young we both look, and I’m pretty sure it is the collagen and gelatin (and minerals?) in the broth. I think it is helping our bodies resist “going south”. When you get to our age, and I’m in the middle of menopause, which doesn’t help at all, everything starts to sag. There really isn’t any way to stop this, but I think that broth helps retard the process. With a good diet, lots of broth, tons of squats, kettlebell swings, and some weight training, you can be in really good shape well into old age.

States Can Seize Assets to Recover Medicaid Costs

Is anyone else alarmed by this? The original story at Hot Air tweeted by Grerp caught my eye:

So, here’s the deal. There used to be a provision whereby the state could recuperate funds spent on a Medicaid patient post-55 years old from whatever assets he owned. So, a low-income individual in nursing home care after age 55 might pass away and his kids would find out the family home or car of whatever he had to his name had to be bought back from the state if they wanted it. It’s called estate recovery, and sounds pretty shady if it’s not boldly advertised as the terms for Medicaid enrollment, which is most definitely is not.

Before the Affordable Care Act’s Medicaid expansion, there weren’t that many people in Medicaid who had much in the way of assets for seizing. But now that Medicaid enrollment requirements have been relaxed, more people with assets but low income are joining the program or being forced into it. For instance, a couple in their 50s who, say, retired early after losing jobs in the bad economy may have assets but show a very low income. Under Obamacare, if their income is low enough to qualify for Medicaid, they must enroll in Medicaid unless they want to buy totally unsubsidized coverage in the now-inflated individual market.

This website has a 50 state look at Medicaid expansion, This US Department of Health and Human Services website spells out the 1993 Estate Recovery Mandate, and here’s another website explaining how this works under the Affordable Care Act of 2010.

I love how the mandate is so ambiguous and open-ended; they can recover costs: “At State option, any other items covered by the Medicaid State Plan.” Any other items. Nice.

The Lost Art of Lying

I’m a terrible liar; I learned early in life that I was no good at it, so I gave up trying. The problem is that the truth just pops out most of the time. The one thing I don’t have a problem with is lying to authority figures. In high school, I was extremely good at coming up with fantastic stories on why I missed a class. I got so good at it that I pretty much skipped school constantly with no repercussions.

The reason I’m bringing this up is the looming switch from paper medical records to a digital database under Obamacare. Now, there have been all kinds of reports saying that doctors are required to ask you if there is a gun in your home or how many sexual partners you have had or are currently having. I’ve read conflicting stories on the NRA getting most of the most damning language out of the new law, and I really don’t have time to research the whole topic, so I’m not going to delve into that.

The main thing is that now there really is a permanent record. You say something once to your doctor and it is put into the database forever more. A lot of people think that doctors are there to help them and that if you don’t tell your doctor about your alcohol/drug/tobacco use, they won’t be able to properly treat any ailments that crop up because of that use. This is a fallacy.

Doctors are not here to help you. Doctors are glorified pill and surgery salespeople. Sure, there are about 10% of all doctors that try really hard to help, and they have their heart in the right place, but they still try to push statins and blood pressure medication on healthy people “just in case”. Plus, if you read medical journals from the 1970s, you will see that the medical community and their pharmaceutical overlords keep lowering the bar for cholesterol and blood pressure, so that more people can be prescribed pills.

Now that your medical records are in a database for eternity, and all your medical expenses are soon to be socialized, your bad behavior will eventually be punished. I advocate lying. If a doctor asks you if you drink, say NO. If they ask whether or not you smoke, say NO. If they ask if there’s a gun in the house, say NO. All information you give them will eventually be used to determine all kinds of things about you.

If they ask how many sexual partners you have had and you say “only my husband” then you are not toeing the liberal line of sluttitude and might be a dangerous radical. If you reply “50 or 60” then you are engaging in risky behavior and might be required to undergo invasive procedures. I think the best answer to that question is “4 but only my husband since marriage”. That is pretty ambiguous, and doesn’t raise any eyebrows. The goal here is to blend.

I do all kinds of things that are considered commonly-accepted dangerous behaviors: I sunbathe, I eat a ton of saturated fats, I intermittent fast instead of eating seven small meals a day, I shoot guns, I smoke, I drink, I drive fast, etc. There is no way I’m going to tell a doctor about any of those things. Heck, I pretty much refuse to see a doctor except when I break something or am in dire health.

Even though I am disgustingly healthy and in good shape, every time I did go to a doctor, they always wanted to prescribe me statins and blood pressure medication “just in case”. My blood pressure is very low, and I like cholesterol; my brain is the most cholesterol-rich organ in my body. I like my brain and its cholesterol, and I don’t want to take a drug that lowers that cholesterol.

How long will it be before refusing to take statins and blood pressure medication is considered risky behavior? What will happen if you defy your doctor? When doctors are government employees, how much power will they have over you? Think of doctors as if they are as powerful as IRS agents. Soon there will be three things you can’t avoid: Death, Taxes, and Forced Healthcare.

Thoughts on NSA Data Mining

Think about it; every small company has their servers backed up to “the cloud”. The company I work for didn’t until recently, but when the dude maintaining our server retired, we hired a national company to handle our IT needs. It seemed like the thing to do; it only costs a couple hundred bucks a month & everything is backed up each night. They maintain our software & hardware, etc.

So what is on the server that gets backed up? All of our email, for one thing. All of the job quotes, purchase orders, subcontractor communications, discussions with the accountants, financial statements, loan documents, vacation requests, discussions with bankers, wire transfers, etc. God only knows the discussions the owner has with the huge national companies that make up our customer base. God only knows the discussions the receptionist has with her friends/lovers.

Stored on one of the massive server hard drives is every drawing for everything we have ever built. Every contract we have ever signed. Every piece of paper, which we wanted to keep the info but not store the hard copy, has been scanned & stored on those hard drives, which in turn are backed up to some server somewhere out there in internet land.

One of the massive server hard drives is dedicated solely to me for all of my accounting functions. Every company we have owned since ~Y2K and all of their financial data is there. Every sale of every company is there. That is where I store all of the data for all of my accounting programs, which in turn stores all of my customer and vendor info including all of their FEINs & invoices, payments, etc.

So every piece of information that a company has to have to be a company is on our servers, being backed up to what is almost certainly some sort of Microsoft backup system. You know it is. This is what the NSA IRS BLAH BLAH is going after. They want all of the small company information. Small companies are notoriously tight-lipped about their operations, but then they voluntarily throw all of their “secret” info out there online.

Sure, the NSA wants info on individuals, too. They want to be able to crucify any target with that target’s own cross, that the target put online themselves. I get that. But here’s the deal, how well are They going to be able to put it all together? I’ve been online since you had to put the phone receiver in that little box & you could only communicate with huge companies & universities. Then slowly there were different bulletin boards you could access. Remember when almost every archaic website decided to start charging for content? I think that was the very early 90s. That didn’t last long.

How many variations of me does the NSA have? Hell, I don’t even remember some of the different usernames I have used throughout the years. I’ve never used my real name. Remember the heady days of day-trading penny OTC stocks? No, of course you don’t, you were 13 years old. It was all the rage & everyone who was anyone was meeting up on the OTC pages of Raging Bull. I was there every day. What was my user name? I seriously can’t remember, lol.

What was my user name on AOL? LiveJournal? Myspace? Blogger? I used to frequent Gawker back when it hired heterosexual males & then years later when Jezebel used to actually be a site where you discussed difficult periods instead of just screeching victim feminism. What was my user name? What is my user name on Street Carnage? I’ve been on there since day 1 & have contributed numerous times. Hell, I have had long term blogs on different blogging platforms since the 1990s using various names. What are those names? Have They put them all together yet?

So, if you are out there NSA & have all my data of everything I have put out there, please send me a copy of it all because it would make for very entertaining (yet cringe-worthy) reading. Kthxbai!

Cyprus Wakes Up

Finally some people in Cyprus are actually protesting against the heist that is being threatened. I’ve been pretty disappointed by how incredibly sheep-like the Cypriots have been about the prospect of having savings stolen; they so calmly & peacefully waited in line at the ATM for whatever scraps of cash they were allotted FROM THEIR OWN MONEY!!!!

Cyprus is one of the oldest civilizations, but they have a long history of rolling over & peeing on themselves. The most outlandish was in 1974 they allowed Turkey to take the Northern section of their island. They still haven’t gotten it back! That was almost 40 years ago. WTF? Northern Cyprus now resembles Chernobyl.

This picture was on Drudge this weekend. Does it look like Kimmy is being restrained? Or is he being held upright? Frankly, if I were restraining someone I would get some younger, stronger men to do it, but that’s just me. The Telegraph says it is ritualistic:

The new leader of the authoritarian regime was pictured with his hands clasped firmly around those of two senior generals, in a ritualistic photograph that strongly echoed the New Year’s routine of his father, Kim Jong-il.

In other news, is anyone else alarmed that Cyprus is levying money from people’s savings accounts? Um, why would anyone ever deposit money into a bank again? Notice of course that they aren’t taxing the population; they are only taking from people responsible enough to have more money than they spend. So the deadbeats & spendthrifts get a pass. Business as usual.

What’s more disturbing is that this isn’t a big story in America. If you look closely, you might find a small blurb buried on a news site, but it should be splashed across the headlines everywhere. I think this is a test to see how the world reacts to the news. Like if people are not upset & the news doesn’t spread, we could see this happening here.

It would be totally fine with what passes for news in America. Gawker Inc seems fine with the plan because it will mostly affect Russian Businessmen. Doesn’t affect me! The only negative thing they had to say about it was, “Why lean on the little guy?” in reference to the small depositors. Or in other words, “Tax the Rich!”

The ironic thing here is that money is taken from bank accounts to bail out the banks.

On Living Frugally

I like reading about people living frugally. Not cheap where you live a mean existence, but living well below your means & then splurging sometimes for special things. I’m much more of a splurge than my husband is, but when it is apparent that a splurge is happening (like the other night at the sushi place) he can jump right in with the best of them.

A long time ago in the early 90s, I was working part time as office manager at a machine shop & my mom called & asked what I was doing. I replied that I was working on a budget to see how little I would have to work to meet my ends. I was always big on spend less = work less. Right now I’m slowly whittling my current job down to a part time gig.

Lower your cost of living wherever you are able. That car payment adds how much to your monthly expenses? I work in the most depressed area of my town & I see way more brand new, high-end luxury cars here than in the better parts of town. Every shack in this neighborhood has an Escalade parked in front. Granted, everyone here has their rent paid by the gubmint, food paid by the gubmint & daycare paid by the gubmint whilst working at their gubmint jobs, but still, how much does that cost per month?

The key is to have no debt. Pay everything off. Literally do not spend money on ANYTHING until you pay that debt off. Credit card debt is the worst; if you are unable to pay it off each month then quit using them altogether. First pay off your credit cards, then your car loans, then your school loans and then finally pay off your house (but only if you really want your house forever).

How much is your phone bill per month? How much do you spend on TV? How much is your weekly restaurant tally? How much of a car do you need? How much of a house do you need? If it is just you or the two of you, if you need a large house you have too much crap. That you bought on credit. On which you still carry a balance. On which you are paying interest. Next time you see some crap you want, just say NO.

Do not clip coupons. Coupons are for highly processed crap-in-a-box. Buy meat (you can buy cheap ground beef & make chili for practically nothing) buy a couple of potatoes & cook your own damn meal instead of eating the frozen/microwaved stuff they sell at all the chain restaurants. This will save you a bunch on doctor bills in the future, too.

I’m not advocating frugality for savings, though; I say be frugal so that you hardly have to go to work. If you can work 20 hours a week and live well then why not do so? Have a little extra in savings so that a financial disaster doesn’t destroy you, but saving for the future is useless in this unstable economy. Work less, spend less, live more.

A lot of the Baby Boomers think that they need to save more for retirement when what they really need to do is spend less. Like the Gubmint, instead of trying to increase revenue, try spending less. Hahahaha, just kidding, there would be riots in the streets if the gubmint quit handing out money and prizes to the entitled class!

I figure that if anything happened to my job & suddenly jobs requiring math & Excel spreadsheets disappeared, I could probably eke out an existence on as little as $10K – $15K per year. If I was able to manage a 20-hour-week job somewhere, I would be able to do that & go to the bar occasionally. It all depends on your priorities; you can work a lot for a lot of crap you don’t need or you can work a little & have a lot of extra time.

Granted, if you have kids, all bets are off. They require a lot of room & money, so reducing your expenses is not going to happen if you have kids.
